What is a cover actually protecting against?
A cover is not decoration; it exists to hold off four kinds of damage. Which one you care about decides the material.

The two that bite hardest are rain and crushed corners. For both, a clear cover inside a pouch is the reliable combination. Pouches are covered in pouches, cases and carrying.
How each material behaves
Clear vinyl
The most common, the cheapest and the most forgiving. The design of the cover still shows, which matters if you chose the book for how it looks. A stretchy one keeps working as the book thickens.
It is weak on fading and on corners: transparent means light passes, and thin means no cushion.
Leather
The best for corner protection and for how it feels in the hand, and it changes colour as you use it, which suits a book you will keep for years. It gives you no room on size, though. Most are cut close, and a book that keeps taking mounted sheets will stop going in.
Fabric
Light, blocks sunlight, and sometimes washable. Nishijin weave or sashiko lets you match the book's own texture. It does not like water, so put it inside a pouch on a wet day.
Hundred-yen shops
These work. B6 and A6 clear book covers fit the standard size, around 16 x 11 cm, well enough. They almost never reach the large format at 18 x 12 cm.
When you try, take the book to the shop and hold it against the item. Compatibility claims on packaging use no shared baseline.
Should the cover come off at the counter?
This worries people, and it should not. Handing the book over with its cover on is not a discourtesy; if anything it shows the book is looked after.
In practice, though, taking it off makes things easier, for two reasons.
- A cover makes the page harder to hold flat, which adds work for the person writing
- A stiff clear cover actively pulls the open page closed
Fix a sequence and you never have to think about it: slip the cover off while you queue, hand the book over open, put it back on once you have it again.
Thin vinyl causes almost no trouble left on. Take heavy leather or fabric off.
Why covers stop fitting
Nearly every "it will not go on" comes down to thickness, not height and width.
- A new concertina runs about 1.5 to 2 cm
- A dozen or so mounted sheets take it past 2.5 to 3 cm
- Leather and rigid covers cannot absorb that difference
Measure height, width and current thickness before buying, and if more sheets are coming, shop against the thickness plus 5 mm to 1 cm. The size and accessory fit check narrows it down from those three numbers.
Making one, or working around it
For a large or irregular book that nothing off the shelf fits, making or improvising is often quicker.
- Clear book-covering film: the self-adhesive film libraries use, cut to the cover. It adds almost no thickness and makes the cover water-resistant
- A tenugui or a furoshiki: wrapping alone stops fading and rubbing, and imposes no size limit whatever
- Folded card: the standard paperback cover fold works unchanged. Still paper, so still no good in rain
All of these cost a few hundred yen to try. When nothing on the market fits a large-format book, switching to wrapping is the surest move.
